Teaching Kids

We went to an Adventist church to teach kids for our project in Speech and Drama and English. The whole second year was there (we are 8) and it looked like a bonding session. Teacher Dane gave us two choices for the project: a) teach at the Sabbath School or b) contribute an amount to help for the supplies. We chose option A and the guys of the class were overly excited about it.

Thursday
They thought of showing them magic and jokingly, teach them bad words (which is really not supposed to be done). It was supposed to be the next Saturday but they insisted that it would be a busy week for all of us and we won't have time to do it aside from this Saturday. They never thought of preparing.

That night, two of my female classmates and I (who sleep at the same dorm) discussed on what activities we could give them. Of course, coloring was one of the first suggestions. Storytelling and origami were also included into the program. Songs were certainly present.

Friday (the next day)
Teacher Dane discussed about the project consuming our time to review for the National Achievement Test. I guess it's also because of the guys' constant interruptions to joke around.

Saturday (today)
My Mom woke me up at 6:30 am. I was really sleepy because I slept late (ssshhh...) last night. I remained on my bed for about 10 minutes before finally taking responsibility. I ate and noticed the note on the whiteboard reminding my Father to pick me up before 7. I thought it was too early. I got out of the house at around 7:30.

My cousin (and classmate), Camille, said that she'll be waiting for me at Daang Malabag (trans: "way to Malabag", path entering our Barangay) but her Mom sent a message saying that she's still at home so we decided to just pick her up as well (my Father drives tricycle).

The meeting place was Olivarez, Tagaytay. That's where we usually meet since they live in Tagaytay and that's the nearest we could be. Camille and I were looking for school supplies shop to get crayons for the kids but all the shops were still closed. We found Kaye with her Mom. Unfortunately, her shoe was broken so they needed to get a new one. We went with them looking for shoes but she couldn't pick something she liked, or the ones she liked don't have her size. Finally, when they found one and asked for the price, it was too high and so we left and her Mom decided to just get sandals from their rest house.

We went to McDonald's to see Iza, another classmate. She was eating pancakes. We sat with her and the some of the guys came in (Jayson and Aaron). We asked where they bought the crayons and went there to buy some as well.

We were already complete but we waited for Kaye's Mom to arrive and give her the sandals. We thought it was already late so we urged Kaye to just bear the shoes but on our way out, we saw Kaye's Mom.

We rode the jeepney going to Silang Bayan. We will meet Teacher Dane at the Catholic Church. The trip was fun, as if we owned the jeepney because of the noise. They talked about the what happened during CAT marching exercise. I heard a couple of DotA terms from the guys. We thought Boy wasn't existing anymore because he remained silent for the rest of the trip.

We waited at the church for a while. Teacher Dane was on the other side. We went to the Adventist Church and got the first sight of some of the kids we are going to handle. I noticed them go gentle and friendly when they saw some of the kids.

When we entered the room, I noticed the fishes I drew for Teacher Dane. And they were colored, some having blue and purple eyes. Overall, though, they were good. After a few minutes, we decided to start the class. We introduced ourselves and asked for their names. Some of the kids had the same name as our teachers XD

We taught them some songs we learned during our devotional at school. We tried teacheing them "I'm Happy Today", but after some time, they started going all wimpy. I knew my classmates were getting worried on how they'll bring their spirits up. I decided to take a rest after the first song. I prepared the materials for our paper folding.

Next was storytelling. Well, I didn't do it, but Iza and Kaye did. Kaye knows a lot about Bible stories. I know the ones from the New Testament and minimal from the Old. To cheer the kids up, Jayson and Boy performed magic tricks. They associated them with Christian ideas. Jayson had to go out to buy fuel for his flaming wallet and we just entertained them with songs.

When he was ready, he was asking Iza and Kaye to tell the kids about the magic. (Like asking, "Do you want to see another magic trick?") I was thinking if he would associate it with hell as what he said (jokingly again) before, but fortunately, he didn't (that's great.)

The coloring activity was given to the younger ones and origami to those who are older. I taught them how to make an origami tulip (which I studied last night XD) and they were enthusiastic, although some couldn't follow my instructions. Iza was with me and Ezra was trying to do what they were doing but both of them disappeared probably after seeing some rudeness. I told them that we would be in trouble if we don't follow God's commandments like what happens to the flower if we couldn't follow the instructions. I understand them getting lost since paper folding is somehow tricky.

I expected all of them to be well-behaved but some did not meet my expectations. Since they are old enough to understand things and make their own decisions, some insulted the other's work. I keep on telling them that it's bad but I don't know if that sank into them.

We finished in time for the food to be served. I was really hungry and excited with the sandwiches. I don't like peanut butter that much but being hungry, I didn't care.

Awarding! I gave candies for those who finished first and who made the best paper flower (chosen by Mr. Brian Jayson Umandap XD)

Teacher Dane told us that we would be singing for the church that afternoon. On our way to her house, the kids we taught thanked us with smiles on their faces. It was a good feeling for me, and I know my other classmates felt the same way. We were tired but we enjoyed teaching. They asked if we will be there next Sabbath. They said yes, but I'm not sure. I don't want to disappoint them.

We rode Teacher Dane's car and talked about the teaching experience. Ezra said that one of the older boys kicked him for no reason. They were angry but I told them to just let him off. Of course, he wouldn't get back on him--he's not a person who picks fights.

We ate chicken for lunch. Nobody wanted to be the first to stand up and eat until Aaron did. We were waiting for him XD

We sang and it was a total disaster because we don't know when to enter. I think it would be better if we sang "Who Am I". And they do think the same XD
