Partial Solar Eclipse

It was my first time to see a solar eclipse. It wasn't something like this one because what I saw was just partial. I was so happy when I read a few weeks ago that there would be a solar eclipse on this day. I have always wanted to see a total solar eclipse, but yeah, I'm fine with the partial we, Filipinos, saw today.

The total eclipse was seen in other parts of Asia, but not in the Philippines. It's kinda disappointing that our neighbors saw this spectacular event, yet the Philippines did not. Makes me wanna say, "That's unfair, moon!" haha.

It was our break time (around 9:20 am) at school when the eclipse happened. I wasn't expecting to see it because it was cloudy, but I did :D We looked at it without eye protection or special glasses. Heh, you know young ones never prepare XD. Every now and then, my classmates would say, "Ang sakit sa mata!" (Not-so-accurate-translation: "It hurts my eyes!"). I wanted to tell them that we shouldn't really be looking at it straight XD Our elementary science teacher would kill us haha.

The clouds covered the sun, but it was also good because it made looking at it more comfortable for the eyes. I saw the eclipse with Jacie and most of my other classmates who are also interested with this event.

According to a site I visited, there would be 4 eclipses (both lunar and solar) for 2010. I wanna see more eclipses, especially a total solar eclipse. I haven't seen a lunar eclipse yet, and I was too lazy to care, but when I saw some pictures of a lunar eclipse, I changed my mind. I've always thought that it is similar to having a new moon, but I was wrong. I guess lack of info made me miss the other lunar eclipses that ocurred before.

Thanks to Yahoo for the image of the eclipse in this entry :D

Persistent Chase

Author's Note: Nothing, I just found this in my PC files. This was my project in Filipino II, which was actually in English XD Just wanna share, I guess? XD Yeah right, I'm not a good writer >_> If it suddenly reminds you of a certain show, then forget that show muhahaha!

----------------------

The click-clacking of shoes echoed along the corridor of Sacred Crest’s second floor. She ran along the hallway of the school looking for the classroom she’s supposed to be in. It was her first day in that school and she has no idea where the room is located. She panted as she turned a corner hoping that her instinct was leading her to the right way.

Three girls appeared before her. She skidded with the sudden halt.

“Umm…can you tell me where the third year B room is? I’m new here,” she asked.

“The third year B room?” asked the leftmost girl.

“Walk straight and turn left. The first room that you will see is the third year B room,” answered the tallest of the three.

“Thanks,” she answered and walked past them. The girls looked at each other and giggled.

There it was—the first room to the left. She stood in front of the door thinking of what to say. Maybe she should just open the door and say, “Good morning.” A part of her hesitated and a weird feeling swept through her. She held the doorknob and opened the door.

She went inside of what seemed like a weird classroom. There were cubicles, sinks and urinals. And there stood a guy opposite her facing the wall urinating. He turned to look at who the “newcomer” was and his eyes almost pooped out seeing a girl inside the men’s restroom.

She felt blood rush to her face as it turned red and felt hot. She has entered the men’s restroom! “I’m sorry!” she blurted out and went out shutting the door.

She looked at the room next to it and the sign on its door verifies that it is the girl’s restroom. She wanted to cry seeing how her first day of school started.

+++++

After years of searching, she finally found the room she was looking for. The class was in the middle of their Chemistry discussion.

“Oh, our new student. Please come in and introduce yourself,” the teacher said.

She walked towards the teacher who smiled at her warmly.

“Good morning, everyone. My name is Megan Perez and I have recently moved here from Makati. I hope to be friends with all of you.”

The teacher showed her to her seat. She walked towards her designated place and noticed a familiar face that looked at her blankly. It was the guy she saw in the restroom. “You?!”

He turned away from her. Unfortunate events come one after another. First, getting inside the men’s restroom then seeing somebody peeing and now, becoming his seatmate.

+++++

Lunch time came. Everyone welcomed her and asked her about herself. She answered each one gladly and made lots of friends. Everyone greeted her except for the guy she saw inside the restroom.

She glanced at him and turned back to her other classmates. “What’s he’s name?” she asked in a low voice.

“Oh, that guy? He’s Adrian Mendoza. He’s not very friendly at all.”

“Unfriendly? That may explain it…but still I have to apologize to him properly,” Megan thought.

Adrian stood up and went out of the room. Megan excused herself and followed him.

+++++

“Hey, wait!” Megan called out running towards him. He continued walking without turning back. Grabbing his arm, she said, “I told you to wait.”

“You’re that girl,” he said.

She quickly released his hand and turned away. “Umm…yeah…I just wanted to apologize properly.”

“It’s fine, as long as you didn’t see anything.”

“Oh, I never saw anything.”

“That’s good. Then I’m going,” he said and turned to go.

“What a guy…” Megan muttered. “What they said is true. But I want to be friends with everyone like I said earlier…” She looked at Adrian. “That’s it! I’ll make him my friend! Go, Megan!”

Then everyone stared at her with amazement. She had talked too loud.

+++++

“Okay, Plan A,” Megan whispered as she hid behind a trash scan, spying on Adrian. “I’ll ask him where the library is…”

She jumped out of her hiding place and called. “Hey!” But nobody was there. He disappeared while she was pondering.

“What is it?” asked a voice from behind. She jumped back in surprise.

“Huh?”

“Why were you following me?”

“Following? No! I was just wandering around looking for the library. Anyway, do you know where it is?” Megan said nervously. “Oh, my, how did he know he was being followed?” she thought.

“Turn right over there, go down the stairs and turn left,” he instructed.

“Can you show me the way? I’m kinda stupid with directions, proven by that restroom incident,” she chuckled.

“It’s an easy instruction,” Adrian said then went away.

“Argghh! He pisses me off! But I have to continue on with my mission…” Megan thought.

While waiting for their next class, Megan tried her plan B. She intentionally dropped her books while walking towards her table, expecting him to help her pick them up. But to her surprise, he took no notice of her.

“Not even a gentleman…” Megan thought. “But I still have Plan C…”

That lunch time, she saw Adrian eating alone.

“Chance!” She thought. She went to his table and sat with him. He looked at her, bewilderment mixed with gladness he didn’t want to show. Nobody has eaten with him for a long time now. He was alone—all the time.

“Want some?” Megan offered her spaghetti.

“I’m fine.”

“Com’on, have a bite. It’s good.”

Adrian stared at her for a moment then transferred 50% of the spaghetti to his plate, much to Megan’s shock.

“Okay, you said so.”

“Argh! That’s too much!” Megan protested trying to take back what he has taken. Adrian blocks her fork and successfully chomps a fork of spaghetti.

“You’re crazy!”

Adrian chuckled. Megan was surprised once again. First time did she see him chuckle since the day she transferred. It felt great that her plans are taking fruit.

+++++

They started to talk more and more each day. He became more and more open to her making her feel happy. Success. She has made him a friend. But now, it seemed like they are closer to each other than anybody else in the class.

They walked home together, eating street foods like fish ball and barbecue while talking about their day. She started developing a certain feeling towards him. It was strange.

It was only when a classmate approached him that Adrian realized what was happening.

“We’ve noticed that you are extremely close to Megan. Are you two hiding something from us?” asked one of his classmates.

Adrian remained silent for a minute or two before giving “no” as a reply. He let his guard down and actually became close to the girl he must avoid. He must cut this relationship before he is completely overcome by her charm.

Days passed and Adrian never talked to Megan. She felt awkward because he seemed to have returned to his snobbish attitude. She wondered why he avoided her.

When it became too unbearable for her, she decided to leave a letter in his locker. She wanted to meet with him and talk about the matter. She hoped it would work.

+++++

Adrian carefully opened the envelope. She checked the back for the sender but only his name was written. He unfolded the paper inside and read:

Adrian,

I was glad that my efforts to make you my friend worked but it seems that you are avoiding me once again. I want to talk to you about the problem. It’s getting more and more intolerable each day. Please meet me at the town square at exactly 1 o’clock this Saturday. Please… talk to me.

Megan

Adrian thought long and hard before returning the letter into his locker. To come or not to come. If he does, he would be falling into confusion again, but if he doesn’t, he would hurt a person who became close to his heart. He dismissed the thought and went back to his classroom.

+++++

It was Saturday. Megan has been waiting at the town square since 12 o’clock. She took the last piece of her burger and waited. Ten minutes…twenty…thirty…No sign of him yet. “It’s only 12:30. The time is 1 pm. No need to worry,” she assured herself. She continued to wait.

It was 1:30 and still no shadow of him. The sky darkened and thick clouds swarmed. Rain began to pour. She sat there in the middle of the square and waited for hours in the rain. She hoped for him to show up and she knew he would.

+++++

Adrian looked at the rain-soaked Megan waiting for him. It was three o’clock. He shaded her with his umbrella. She looked up to him, her pale face weak and weary. He gave her his jacket.

“Let’s go to the mall and get you some dry clothes,” he said. Megan simply nodded and followed.

She shivered as they entered the air-conditioned mall. They went to the second floor through the elevator and bought clothes for Megan. After changing, they went to the elevator again to take a sip of hot coffee at a coffee shop at the ground floor.

Neither of them said anything to the other. They were the only ones riding the elevator and the silence was awkward.

“I’m sorry for keeping you waiting,” Adrian spoke at last.

He felt a sudden weight on his shoulder. Megan fainted because of an amazingly high fever.

“We are nearly at the ground floor, she’ll be fine,” he thought and held her in his arms.

But Adrian was wrong. It was not simply a rain but a typhoon has entered the country. The power failed when a lightning stroke the electric tower. The generators seemed to have malfunctioned as well.

He laid Megan on the floor and covered her with his jacket. He kept his distance and sat in a corner. He wondered how long the power failure will last. He checked his phone but the battery was empty. He tried Megan’s phone but it had no load. He transferred his SIM card into her phone but it did not accept it. He wished he charged his phone before leaving the house.

He stared in space. He was becoming tired of waiting. He’s starting to feel what he thought Megan felt while waiting for him. He heard little noise from the outside.

“Do you know how long I’ve waited under the rain just to talk to you?” Megan mumbled. Adrian looked her way. What did she say, just now? He stared at her. Is she conscious or what? No. She was sleep talking. “I want to hate you but I can’t. I swore to be a friend to everyone in our class. I feel stupid for taking that so seriously, but because of that principle…” she started mumbling again. He started feeling suspicious if she really was awake. “…but because of that principle…”

He waited if she’ll continue what she was saying.

“…I came closer to you…”

He blushed, hearing such words from her. What was really happening? He couldn’t understand. His head started aching thinking about what he just heard. Processing the message was so hard and complicated, although the words were so simple to understand. Could she be saying that she has fallen in love with him?

“What are you talking about?” he asked hoping that the girl is really awake. He got a reply too far from the question.

“I thought you were a creepy snob but getting to know you proves me wrong. I’ve started…”

He wondered how a sick person could sleep talk this long. Was she pretending? Who knows?

“She’s delirious,” he thought.

It was her last words that totally shook his world.

“I’ve started loving you…”

She might be delirious, alright, but she would not say things like that even though she doesn’t know about it. It’s what she feels. The lights went back.

“You don’t have to wait under the rain just to tell me that,” Adrian said and lifted Megan. “You’re a crazy idiot.”

The door opened and worried maintenance men waited outside.

“We’re sorry for the delay. Are you two alright?”

“I’m fine, but this girl here has a very high fever. Please excuse us.”

By looking inside Megan’s wallet, Adrian was able to find her house. He left knowing that her parents will be there to take care of her. They thanked him for helping her.

+++++

Adrian knew he feels something towards her but chose to hide them. He wanted to avoid her to stop the progress of this feeling. But what will he do now that he learned that she is feeling the same way as he? This was what he was trying to avoid—confusion. Loving is so complicated, after all…

+++++

She stared at the blank white ceiling of her bedroom, trying to remember the events that occurred the other day. She was waiting for Adrian to come at the town square when the rain began to fall. Hours passed when the guy showed up and the two of them went to the mall to buy her dry clothes. They went on the elevator to grab a cup of coffee at the ground floor. Then she couldn’t remember anything at all. What was that that happened in the elevator? She thought long and hard. What was that…what exactly happened? Small fragments of her memory flashed along her head. The elevator suddenly stopped and the lights went out…then her head was resting on…wait…ADRIAN’S SHOULDER? She blushed at the thought. What was she doing? It was a crazy day. What would Adrian think about her? Would their relationship get more severed? Her head started aching again because of thinking about the incident.

+++++

Megan was walking along the corridor when she saw Adrian approaching. Her heartbeat raced and her face turned tomato red. What was happening with her body, she had no idea. After that incident, she started feeling this way around Adrian. She was nervous.

“Umm…Megan…about last time…” Adrian started. She was so lost in thought that she did not notice him come close to her.

“W-What about it?”

“Well…there was something you said to me when you fainted and delirious…”

“Said? I don’t remember anything that I’ve said to him…” Megan thought. Then the memories came in. She was half-conscious that time and she said the secret she’s holding… her feelings towards Adrian. Her face reddened in response to the scenario.

“Megan?”

“Ah…huh?”

“Your face is red.”

“R-really? I don’t think it is! Ahahaha…”

“Uh, yeah, about what you said…”

“Oh, it’s time for our classes! Hurry up or you’ll be late! See ya!”

Then she ran away. Adrian stared at her then shouted, “But our classroom is the other way!”

+++++

Megan had been avoiding Adrian for days. Adrian was starting to wonder if she meant what she said back at the elevator. He tried focusing his attention to school but he can’t seem to do it. He continued thinking about her, he wanted to hear her voice and be with her like before. So this was how it felt for her when he avoided her. He needed to end this chase and confront her. Tell her what she needs to know.

He decided to think things over and not make harsh decisions. On his way up the roof top, Megan was going down. They stopped on their tracks and stared at each other.

“Hi.”

“Megan, uh…” he hesitated. “…we need to talk.”

“About what?”

“Let’s end this chase, Megan. I avoid you, you chase me. You avoid me, I chase you. I’m getting tired of this. Can’t we talk this over?”

She remained silent for a couple of seconds.

“I—I’m sorry but I have to go…” she walked past him trying to hide her emotions. She’s such a coward, but this was all she could do…

Adrian grasped her hand. “Don’t go.”

Megan remembered the Koreanovelas she watches and what these things might lead to. Proposal or something. Her heart started thumping fast. The silence continued to surround them. What now?

“I tried to forget you, but I just can’t,” he spoke. Megan looked back to him then bowed her head. She stared at the steps of the stairs.

He let go of her hand but continued to face the opposite side. “I love you, Megan.”

Tears started to blur her vision. Her sob caught Adrian’s attention. He was surprised to see her crying. He took the first countermeasure he knew would comfort her—to hug her. “You don’t need to cry.”

Although he said not to, she cried harder.

“What a stubborn girl…” he said and smiled. But he knew that if it wasn’t for her being persistent and hard-headed, then they wouldn’t have been together. They wouldn’t get along—and wouldn’t fall for each other…

The End
